What Is Echizen Lacquerware?
Echizen lacquerware comes from the Kawada area of Sabae in Fukui Prefecture and is officially designated a Traditional Craft of Japan. Local makers call it the oldest lacquerware region in the country, with roots said to reach back some 1,500 years. Its humid, often cloudy climate suits urushi, the natural sap of the lacquer tree, which hardens slowly in moist air into a tough, glossy coat. Today Echizen also supplies much of the lacquerware used in Japan's restaurants and inns, where pieces must be both beautiful and built for daily use.
