Some traditions do not need reinventing. Our Omotenashi Osechi brings together seven of the dishes Japanese families have opened on New Year's morning for generations — the ones everyone reaches for first — finished with handmade Japanese sweets.

What's Inside

• Kobumaki (Kelp Rolls) — Rolls of kombu, rich in umami. Kelp signifies longevity and prosperity.
• Kuri Kinton (Sweet Potato Paste and Chestnut) — Sweet chestnut and golden sweet potato. Its color is the color of wealth and victory.
• Sweet Tanba Black Beans — Kuromame from Tanba, the region prized above all others for its large, glossy beans. Black wards off misfortune; the bean itself means working well and living well.
• Pink Kamaboko — Steamed fish cake in festive red, one of Japan's two colors of celebration.
• White Kamaboko — Its white counterpart. Together, red and white mark every auspicious occasion.
• Date-maki (Sweet Rolled Omelet) — A thick, dashi-flavored omelet rolled like a scroll. For learning, and for a household kept safe.
• Seasoned Kazunoko (288g / 10.2oz) — Crisp, seasoned herring roe. Countless eggs for a flourishing family, and longevity for parents.
• 3-Piece Nerikiri (Japanese Sweets) — Seasonal confections shaped by hand, as served with matcha. Included as standard.
